Orphan. Runaway. Thief.

Since the moment I was ripped from my mother's womb, I've been an outcast amongst my own kind. The Sidhe might possess magical Gifts, unbelievable wealth and unfathomable power but I don't want a thing to do with them. I ran away from their lands in the Highlands of Scotland when I was eleven years old and I've never looked back. I don't need a Clan. I've got my own family of highly skilled thieves who mean more to me than any Sidhe ever could.

Unfortunately for me, the playboy heir to the Moncrieffe Clan has something I desperately need. To get it back, I'm going to have to plunge myself back into that world, no matter what the consequences may be. I suppose it's just as well I have sense of humour. I think I'm going to need it.

By bestselling author Helen Harper, Gifted Thief is the first book in the Highland Magic series.

Gifted Thief Highland Magic Book 1 eBook Helen Harper

In the beginning we meet a young orphan girl who is treated awfully by the Sidhe who are raising her. They have even refused to give her a name. After a chance meeting with a handsome young man she decides enough is enough and runs away. She gives herself a name and makes a family. Her new family is a group of outcasts who become thieves and pretty good ones at that. When her past life comes back because it needs her, she starts a magically adventure. It has back stabbing, lust, love and friendship.

Now that you know what it is about let's talk about it. Integrity is a young, head strong, beautiful and talented young woman. She made quite the life and friendship through her seedy ways. She has some really great qualities and a completely self aware main character. I enjoyed her as the point of view. I really liked her and feel rather fond of her. I couldn't have imagined a better person to rely this story. Her jokes are hilarious. They made me snort my drink several times. They are cheesy but I love cheesy jokes. Now my favorite character is Bob. He made me laugh and look forward to every time he popped in. He is a perfect side kick and hope to read more about him. It is hard to pick my favorite scene because I liked quite a few. The one that stood out the most was the trip to Foinse. You got to learn a lot about the other characters. Lily was awesome during the trip and Barbie the horse was making me laugh. I liked the way the story flowed and it certainly had many twists and turns. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a fast paced paranormal adventure. You will not be disappointed and I look forward to reading the rest of the series.

Gifted Thief Highland Magic Book 1 eBook Helen Harper Reviews

I've read the first two books in this series and the most important thing I can say to Helen Harper is write faster! I love this series. The main character is flawed but has integrity (hee hee) and she is very likable. I found myself rooting for her endlessly. I also love how intricate the plot is. We get hints at the depth of surprises to come and there is so much unfolding and it seems like it is just the tip of a much larger picture. The book is well written. I love the supporting characters, the interplay between them and the main character just made me enjoy her that much more. I loved the pace of the story. Something is always happening. Not a single boring second. I simply couldn't put these books down. I was so engrossed in the story I found myself reading while cooking, waiting to pick up the kids from school, etc. Every second that I could pick up the story to find out what was going to happen next I did. That's the sign of great writing. I was able to quickly envision the world the author built. I could see it, understand it and lose myself in it. I can't forget to mention the antagonists. Who are the true villains, expect to be kept on your toes on this aspect as I don't think things are going to be straightforward. I love not being able to predict the end of the story after the first few chapters or even halfway through. I give this book 5 stars. The only thing I can say to readers who might read this review is that I've read over a thousand urban fantasy books and this series is right up there in my top pics.
Gifted Thief was a fun read, a fresher look at a Sidhe tale for sure. Northern Scotland is separated from Southern Scotland by a barrier in the south that is holding demon back from the rest of the world. This means that Norther Scotland and the Sidhe that call it home are mostly cut off from the rest of the world, only dangerous ship travel connects them to outside goods. Our mc who names herself integrity has not known anything but misery in her young life until she runs and is taken in by a human of all things and a human that lives a life of non-violent crime. He proceeds to teach her everything she knows until the Sidhe coming calling. Apparently the Sidhe need her dna for something even though she doesn’t want them and many of the Sidhe would prefer her dead. We embark on a tall that where we learn we may not really know who is the bad and who is the good. Integrity will have to keep on her toes if she is going to survive her heritage.
This novel is light, enjoyable entertainment, despite themes of passion, betrayal, mass murder, thievery, malice, and Sidthe class prejudice. In Helen Harper's skillful hands, Scottish heroine Integrity manages to tell her story--insofar as she knows it--matter of factly and without whining, even though she was subjected to a horrible childhood, blamed for the actions of her father, and is now being forced to work with the same clans that callously abused her until she ran away at age eleven. I love the secondary themes of the novel, that a bad/good joke can diffuse (or heighten) tension, that genie wishes ALWAYS backfire somehow, and in particular, that we make our own families if we are smart and lucky, regardless of any biological baggage we may carry. I recommend this book to any reader who enjoys modern, progressive protagonists who take charge, kick ass, and maybe pick a pocket or two along the way. I am off to continue reading the next novel in this series right now!
There are authors who write incredible, solid and somehow "deep" prose that I consider "master story tellers". Then there are many other authors that write more lightweight reads that don't quite grab me, but are entertaining enough to finish the story and even be willing to purchase follow up books from as I am a voracious reader. This is one of the latter. I found this story better than some others I'm also willing to continue financially supporting for their entertainment value so I'd give this one another half star if I could. Its worth reading while I wait for the next book from one of those authors I consider true master story tellers to be released.
